What influences senior solicitor (5+ pqe) pay

At senior level the City / regional pay gap widens further — senior Magic Circle solicitors sit in the £120–170k range with substantial bonuses (£30–100k). US firm seniors regularly hit £250k+ total comp with £50k+ discretionary bonuses.

All but the smallest-firm seniors are above £100k, triggering PA taper. City seniors commonly max out the £60k pension annual allowance; many use the pension carry-forward (prior 3 years unused allowance) to shield £150k+ of salary in year one of a big pay rise.

Partnership profit-share is self-employment income — subject to Income Tax and Class 4 NI (6% between £12,570–£50,270, 2% above), not PAYE. Partners also don't get the workplace pension; they must arrange their own. This changes the tax picture significantly.

Frequently asked questions

How does the 45% additional rate affect me at £250k?
Above £125,140 you pay 45% Income Tax + 2% NI = 47% on every marginal pound. You have zero PA. At £250k your effective overall tax rate (IT + NI) is around 42%, i.e. roughly £105k of tax-and-NI on £250k gross — before pension contributions reduce the bill.
Is City lawyer bonus taxed the same as salary?
Yes — bonus is taxed as PAYE employment income at your marginal rate in the month paid. A large bonus may push you into higher tax bands that month, but the annual settlement reconciles at year end.
