How to Upskill and Gain Qualifications in the UK 2026 (Often Free)

You do not have to go back to university to move your career - or your pay - forward. The UK has a growing set of ways to retrain or gain qualifications, often for free or funded by a loan you only repay when you earn enough. This guide maps the main routes and how to choose.

This guide focuses on schemes in England; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own adult-skills funding.

Free and funded training

• Skills Bootcamps - free, flexible courses of up to 16 weeks for adults aged 19 and over, in sectors where employers are short of skills (digital, technical, construction, health and social care and more). They run from Level 2 to Level 5 and include a guaranteed interview at the end. Ideal if you want to switch sectors quickly.
• Free Courses for Jobs - the government may pay for a Level 3 qualification for eligible adults who do not already have one at that level, in subjects linked to jobs in demand.
• National Careers Service course finder - search free and paid courses, including Skills Bootcamps, available locally or online.

Earn while you learn: apprenticeships

Loans across your working life: the Lifelong Learning Entitlement

From 2025, the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) gives access to loans worth up to £37,000 to fund full or part-time study at any stage of your career. Unlike the old system it covers degrees, Higher Technical Qualifications and individual modules, so you can top up specific skills rather than commit to one long course. Like student loans, you repay it only when your income is above the repayment threshold.

Extra routes worth knowing

• Returnerships - aimed at the over-50s, combining apprenticeships, Skills Bootcamps and work academy placements to get back into work.
• Professional qualifications and CPD - many employers will fund a relevant professional qualification; it is worth asking, especially at a review.

Make it pay: check the target role first

Upskilling is an investment of time, so aim it at a role that actually pays more. Before you commit:
