RAF Squadron Leader Salary 2026/27: OF-3 Take-Home
Squadron Leader is OF-3 on the Armed Forces pay tables, the same rank level as an Army Major and a Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander and paid the same money. In 2026/27 the scale runs £68,624 to £81,960 over eight increments, then continues to £90,371 over five more that the tables reserve for RAF Engineer Officers by selection. The figures include X-Factor and carry the 3.6% award the Government accepted in full on 9 June 2026, backdated to 1 April 2026.

What influences raf squadron leader (of-3) pay
Officers have no trade supplements, so unlike the ranks below them a Squadron Leader on a given increment is paid one figure rather than one of four. What the published range hides instead is a branch restriction: increments OF3-09 to OF3-13, £83,576 to £90,371, are footnoted in the pay tables as open to RAF Engineer Officers and only by selection. They are the one place on the officer scales where the RAF reaches money no other service can, and for every other Squadron Leader the rank stops at £81,960 on OF3-08.
The first two increments pay the same. OF3-01 and OF3-02 are both £68,624, so the first step in rank carries no rise, and from there the scale climbs by £2,222 or £2,223 at a time to £81,960. Because the pay tables are tri-service, the same scale pays an Army Major and a Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander: the badge changes, the money does not.
Branch decides more of the total than rank does at this level, and the pay tables show it twice over. An aircrew Squadron Leader draws Professional Supplement (Aircrew) on top of salary, and at £31,559 a year the OF-3 rate is the highest of any officer rank - so an aircrew officer on the £68,624 entry point is on more in total than a non-aircrew Squadron Leader at the top of the rank, and the total crosses the £100,000 mark where the personal allowance starts to taper. On the engineering side the RAF pays the Engineer Professional Recognition Award at £2,000, £3,000 and £5,000 for levels 1 to 3, against £1,000, £2,000 and £3,000 for the same three levels in the Army.
The whole rank sits in the 40% band, and for anyone claiming Child Benefit it also sits inside the High Income Child Benefit Charge. The Armed Forces pension takes no contribution, so there is nothing to deduct before adjusted net income is tested and gross pay and adjusted net income are the same number. The charge starts at £60,000 and takes 1% of Child Benefit for every £200 above it: at OF3-01 on £68,624 a two-child household gives up £1,005 of the £2,337.40 a year it receives, at OF3-07 on £79,738 it gives up £2,291, and from OF3-08 on £81,960 upwards all of it. For that household, promotion through the rank is worth less than it looks: £68,624 to £75,292 is £6,668 more gross and about £3,096 more in the hand, where a household claiming no Child Benefit keeps £3,867 of the same rise.
X-Factor is already inside these figures, because the pay tables are published including it. And the Armed Forces Pension Scheme 2015 is non-contributory, so unlike an NHS consultant or a headteacher on comparable pay a Squadron Leader has no member contribution coming off before Income Tax - which is exactly why the Child Benefit charge bites earlier here than it does on those salaries.

Frequently asked questions
- What does an RAF Squadron Leader take home in 2026/27?
- On the £68,624 entry rate, take-home is about £50,359 a year or £4,197 a month, after £14,882 Income Tax and £3,383 National Insurance and with no pension deduction. At £81,960, the top of the rank outside the Engineer stream, it is about £58,094 a year or £4,841 a month. Those figures are before any High Income Child Benefit Charge, which applies across the whole rank.
- Why does the Squadron Leader scale go up to £90,371 for some officers?
- Increments OF3-09 to OF3-13 are footnoted in the pay tables as RAF Engineer Officers, by selection. No other branch and no other service reaches them, so £90,371 is a real figure for a small group and an overstatement of the rank for everyone else, who stop at £81,960.
- Does flying pay come on top of a Squadron Leader salary?
- It does, and at OF-3 it is the largest addition anywhere on the officer scales. Professional Supplement (Aircrew) replaced RRP (Flying) for most aircrew from 1 April 2025, and eligible aircrew receive it up to OF-6 by rank-based skill level whatever their current role. The OF-3 rate is £31,559 a year from 1 April 2026, paid on top of the £68,624 to £81,960 salary and taxed as earnings in the same way.
- Is a Squadron Leader paid the same as an Army Major?
- Yes. The Armed Forces Pay Review Body publishes one set of officer scales for all three services, so an OF-3 is on the same money whether the rank is called Squadron Leader, Major or Lieutenant Commander. The only difference at this level is the run of Engineer Officer increments above £81,960, which the RAF has to itself.
- Does a Squadron Leader lose Child Benefit?
- All of it from £81,960 up. The High Income Child Benefit Charge starts at £60,000 of adjusted net income and claws back the full amount by £80,000, and because the Armed Forces pension takes no contribution there is nothing to deduct before adjusted net income is worked out. At the £68,624 entry rate a two-child household still keeps about £1,332 of the £2,337.40. A personal pension contribution is the usual way to bring adjusted net income back down.
