How this calculator works

Enter your gross hourly rate, contracted hours per week and weeks paid per year (default 52). We convert that to an equivalent annual salary (rate × hours × weeks), then run the same Income Tax and National Insurance calculation used on our salary calculator. This calculator has no pension or student loan input, so those deductions are not taken off the result.

Reference hourly rates, 2026/27

  • National Living Wage (21 and over): £12.71 an hour for 2026/27; £10.85 for 18 to 20 year olds (gov.uk National Minimum Wage rates).
  • NHS Band 3 (Agenda for Change, England): £25,760 to £27,476 a year, which is £13.21 to £14.09 an hour on this calculator’s 37.5-hour, 52-week default (NHS Employers pay scales 2026/27).
  • NHS Band 5 (Agenda for Change, England): £32,073 to £39,043 a year, which is £16.45 to £20.02 an hour on the same basis.

The NHS figures are basic pay only, before any High Cost Area Supplement or unsocial-hours payments.

Caveats

  • Results assume you are paid for the number of weeks you enter. If you’re term-time or zero-hours, lower the weeks-per-year input so the annual tax thresholds apply correctly.
  • One rate applies to every hour. Overtime paid at a higher rate is not modelled; add it to your hours at an averaged rate, or use the salary calculator on your expected annual gross.
  • We don’t apply the apprentice rate automatically — enter your actual hourly rate regardless.
  • The calculator is accurate for a gross hourly rate paid through PAYE. An umbrella company’s assignment rate is not your gross pay: gov.uk lists the umbrella margin, employer National Insurance, employer pension contribution, holiday pay and (if applicable) the Apprenticeship Levy as deductions made before your gross pay is worked out, so entering the assignment rate here overstates take-home (gov.uk: working through an umbrella company). If you work through your own limited company outside IR35, see the contractor calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?

We multiply hourly rate × hours per week × weeks paid per year. The defaults are 37.5 hours a week and 52 weeks a year; change either to match your contract.

What is the UK National Minimum Wage?

For 2026/27 the National Living Wage (age 21 and over) is £12.71 an hour. The National Minimum Wage is £10.85 an hour for 18 to 20 year olds and £8.00 for under-18s, and the apprentice rate is £8.00. Source: gov.uk National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage rates.

Does the calculator account for unpaid leave?

By default we use 52 weeks, i.e. you're paid every week of the year including annual leave. If you're term-time only (e.g. teaching or zero-hours), set a lower weeks-per-year value.

Is the tax calculation identical to the salary calculator?

Yes for Income Tax and National Insurance - we annualise your hourly rate to an equivalent gross salary and run the same calculation as the salary calculator. This calculator has no pension or student loan input, so use the salary calculator on the annual figure if you need those deductions.
