What influences police inspector pay
Inspector pay is fully inside the 40% higher-rate band and crosses the £60,000 HICBC threshold for almost all serving officers. Every Inspector family receiving Child Benefit will pay HICBC at 1% per £200 over £60,000.
Inspectors generally do not receive paid overtime - the rank moves to a salaried-only model with rest days in lieu (Time Off In Lieu) for additional hours. The total cash compensation is therefore tighter than a Sergeant doing heavy overtime.
Police Pension Scheme 2015 contribution rises to 13.78% at Inspector pay (2026/27 banded contribution). Higher contribution + 40% IT relief makes pension build-up one of the strongest features of the rank.

Frequently asked questions
- What is take-home for a Police Inspector?
- On £62,500 gross with 13.78% police pension and full Child Benefit HICBC repayment for 2 children, take-home is approximately £37,500-£38,500 a year after Income Tax (40% on most of the salary), NI, pension and HICBC. Without HICBC the figure rises to ~£40,000.
- Why is HICBC such a big factor for Inspectors?
- Every Inspector in the £60,000-£80,000 range is in the HICBC taper. At £62,500 adjusted net income, HICBC clawback is 12.5% of Child Benefit (2 children = £290 charge); at £75,000 the clawback is 75% (£1,750+); at £80,000 it is 100%. Pension sacrifice into AVCs is the standard mitigation route.
- Do Inspectors get London weighting?
- Inspectors in the Met, City of London Police, Surrey, Sussex, Thames Valley, Essex, Kent, Herts, Beds and Hampshire receive London weighting between £2,000 and £7,000 a year depending on force and posting. London weighting is fully taxable and is counted in HICBC adjusted net income.
