UK Foodbank Parcels: Trussell Trust 2024-25 Distribution Stats
The Trussell Trust community of food banks distributed over 2.9 million emergency food parcels in the 2024-25 financial year - a stark indicator of the scale of UK food insecurity. The mid-year update for April to September 2024 alone showed 1.4 million parcels, 69% higher than the same period five years prior. Calendar-year 2025 parcels totalled 2.6 million, a 12% fall versus 2024 as inflation eased and some households recovered.

The detail
The Trussell Trust runs the largest single network of UK food banks but is not the only provider - the Independent Food Aid Network (IFAN) operates a parallel community of around 1,200 independent food banks alongside Trussell's ~1,400 distribution points. The Trussell figures alone therefore materially understate total UK emergency food parcel volumes; combined estimates routinely exceed 4 million parcels per year.
The 2024-25 Trussell financial year saw over 2.9 million emergency food parcels distributed - a sustained high baseline well above pre-pandemic norms (around 1.6 million in 2018-19). The mid-year stats showed 1.4 million parcels in just six months (1 April to 30 September 2024), 69% higher than the same six-month window five years earlier.
Calendar year 2025 brought the first sustained fall in over a decade - parcels dropped by 12% to 2.6 million as inflation eased to around 2-3% CPI and Universal Credit standard allowance was uprated. Trussell attribute the drop to easing pressure rather than declining need: their household survey showed 87% of Trussell users still had a member with a disability or long-term health condition.
For tax + benefits policy, foodbank usage matters as a leading-edge indicator of low-income hardship that does not show up in Universal Credit caseload alone. Most foodbank users in 2024-25 were UC claimants whose standard allowance + housing element + work allowance combined fell short of basic living costs - particularly in private rented accommodation in high-rent regions.

Related statistics
- UK Tax Burden
Effective combined tax (Income Tax + NI) rises from around 18% on a £30,000 salary to 38% on £150,000 for 2026/27 - not the headline marginal rate but the blended total-tax share.
- Real Wages
After 16 years of stagnation, UK real-terms weekly pay finally surpassed its 2008 pre-financial-crisis peak in early 2024 - but only just, and partly due to nominal wage growth outpacing CPI for the first sustained period since the Great Recession.
- Median Household Income
The median UK household has disposable income of £36,700 per year after tax and benefits, equivalised for household size (ONS, financial year ending 2024).
